The “Sophomore Jinx” took on a whole new meaning Monday night in Florida as the home crowd witnessed the 2nd strangest injury of the year that landed 2009 Rookie of the Year Chris Coghlan on the shelf. Coghlan tore the meniscus in his left knee upon greeting Wes Helms in front of the dugout after the veteran 1st baseman won the game for the Marlins with their 4th walk-off victory of the week.

Earlier in the year, Angel’s first baseman Kendry Morales initiated the celebration induced injuries after slamming a walk-off grand slam and slamming his left leg on home plate leaving him with a season ending broken leg.

All I can say is, what is with these athletes of today!? They are supposed to be in the finest shape of any athletes to this date. With so many advancements in fitness and nutrition how can it be possible that these players bodies can not even with stand post victory elation and celebration?  When I won the Co-Ed Advertising League Championship guess what, we won, I jumped for joy, I celebrated, I even drank ( and drank a lot in fact) and still I stood upright injury free. And what’s even more pathetic is I make a year what these players make per inning.

Yes I know its a freak of nature, but its pretty ironic that it happens to the Marlins in a year that has been very disappointing and specifically for Coghlan who although has picked it up of late has experienced a very sub-par second season to date. If surgery is needed, and it appears it will be, the former Rookie of the Year will be on the disabled list for 6-8 weeks and most likely the rest of the season barring a miraculous drive to the playoffs for the Fish which currently reside in 4th place in the National League East.

The highly touted Logan Morrison was brought up from Triple A-New Orleans to replace Coghlan on the roster and made his major league debut Tuesday night in San Francisco. Morrison was beat out in spring training for the 1B job by Gabby Sanchez and has been in the minors since.

They say these things happen in 3′s but, nah…there’s no way it could happen again…………could it?
